Class Reflection on 25th August 2011

Today's class started with a mind game. I was truly amazed at first when Dr Yeap could really do mind reading. But after his explaination, i find this so interesting! It is a game that we could use it in class to amaze the Kindergartens. We also did some fraction activities and how we could find out if the fractions are even with some simple formulas. It was something that we had never learnt in school. I truly learnt a lot from this session.

Class Reflection on 24th August 2011

Today's session was conducted by guest lecturer, Miss Peggy. We had a fun time playing with the uni cubes and our group came up with the most number of toys! She also let us watch videos on how teachers conducted mathematics lessons and wanted us to comment on them. And the class came up with 5 areas that went well in the video.
  • Participation/ Engagment
  • Manipulatives
  • Seating Arrangement
  • Classroom Management
  • Flow of lesson
And areas that could be improved on,
  • Lesson Delivery
  • Attitude
  • Communication
She also introduced to us on Mathematical Investigation.
  • Activity that is divergent in nature
  • Allow pupils to explore and experiment mathematical ideas and situations in many directions
  • Allow pupils to demonstrate problem solving, thinking and communication skills
  • Students can be assessed on their ability to describe, justify solutions
  • Document the steps they have taken to arrive at their solutions.
And it is used to:
  • Introduce a new topic
  • Practise/consolidate a skill or concept
  • Extend a topic
  • Create an environment of Mathematics
It was an enriching session.

Class Reflection on 23rd August 2011

Today's class was as interesting as last night. The pick up stick game made me realized that actually there is a tatic to win the game! It was really amazing. The number game on Lesson 7 was a lucky or unlucky game. It was fun when i could get one of the biggest combination and i got a peg for it! We also learnt that all along, we had the wrong kind of teacher who taught us the wrong way of doing division sum! It could have been so musch easier. We also learnt a new term, subitize which meant that when you look at it, you can identify the amount immediately. There are also 3 types of understanding, procedural understanding, conceptual understanding and conventional understanding. Dr Yeap also gave some examples on the different types of understanding.

We too defined the word mathematics.
  • Making patterns
  • Communicating ideas
  • Making connections
  • Reasoning
  • Developing thinking skills
  • Problem solving

Class Reflection on 22nd August 2011

It was our first class today. In my mind, i was thinking will it be a boring class? Will i be stressed up? What will we be learning? And i was suprised that it was actually a fun class although it made me think alot. I like how Dr Yeap started the class with the counting the position of a letter in the name. After getting it right, i actually felt quite proud of myself as i always could not do Math. During the 4 hours session, we had some fun lessons which i enjoyed alot. The name game, Jun Jun and Lasene game, Poker card game. I even used the Poker card game to trick my husband and he was very amazed! We also learnt some mathematical concepts that we was not really taught during our school days so it was enriching for me. We had learnt the uses of numbers - Ordinal, Rote, Cardinal, Nominal and Measurement. We also learnt the 4 Pre-requitions to counting - Ability to classify before meaningful counting, Ability to do rote counting, One to one correspondence counting and Appreciation of the last number represent the number that they are going to find. I am looking forward to tomorrow's class. =)

Introduction of Myself

My name is Lee Yin Yin June from BSc 05. A 24 years old mummy to be to Tiffany Goh. I am glad and happy to have joined this course and made many great friends. And to be honest, question marks were all over my head when i saw this module. I hope that the module will be a fun one as i have a phobia for Maths since young. By the way, my EDD is on the 28th August.. So Mr Yeap, be prepared that i might popped anytime during your class!
